Frequently Asked Questions
Organic Candles
Many candles labelled “natural” or “eco” still contain synthetic fragrances, bleached wicks, and industrial byproduct waxes like soy or rapeseed - often processed with solvents and grown with pesticides.
At Skär Organics, organic means more - and it's certified.
Our candles are certified organic by the Soil Association, meeting the highest standards for purity, transparency and sustainability. Here's what sets them apart:
- we use pure beeswax and organic coconut wax. No soy, no rapeseed, no hydrogenation, no greenwashing.
- no artificial fragrance, no isolates, no hidden “parfum”.
- we use either unbleached, non-GM cotton or FSC-certified wooden wicks, both entirely natural and untreated.
From soil to scent, every ingredient is chosen with care - and proven with certification. That’s what makes a candle truly organic.
Soy and rapeseed wax are highly processed industrial byproducts. To create wax from these oils, they typically undergo chemical extraction using solvents, followed by hydrogenation - a process that alters their molecular structure to make them solid. These crops are also commonly grown with pesticides and fertilisers, and the final product is far removed from anything truly natural.
At Skär Organics, we only use certified organic ingredients that are naturally derived, untreated by synthetic chemicals, and remain true to their original form.
We use unbleached, non-GM, certified organic cotton wicks - free from zinc, lead, or synthetic stiffeners. We also use FSC certified wooden wicks. Safer for your home, gentler on the planet.
Each candle is handmade from our workshop in Yorkshire, UK using traditional techniques - slow, careful, and with attention to detail. It’s not just a candle; it’s a craft.
